Why it pays to keep your adviser accountable

Posted by:

If you’ve been following my blogs you will know that I am a strong advocate for financial planners and the importance of seeking professional advice. However, financial advice is not a ‘set and forget’ exercise. You should still retain an element of personal responsibility for your own finances and you should definitely keep your adviser accountable for their ongoing service.

Here’s a really good example of why you should meet with your adviser at least once a year…

A client (let’s call ...

“How dumb are we not to have insurance?!”

Posted by:

I have a friend, let’s call him John, whom I have known for over 20 years. John is in his late 40s, married (to a woman in her mid-40s who we’ll call Jane) and they have 3 kids (2 of whom are dependant). John and I used to work together in Brisbane and over the past two decades we’ve had what I’d describe as intermittent contact.

As most people are, John and Jane are always busy, running around, working hard (they ...

Welcome to a new year and a new decade! One of the things the Monarch team particularly looks forward to each new year is seeing how our clients have progressed along their financial journey. Life is always throwing surprises at us – some good, some not so good – but when you have a solid financial plan in place, you don’t have to be worried about what the future may bring.

Which brings me to the topic of our first blog ...

What are you paying for?

You might have noticed there have been a few reports in the media (again) about life insurance commissions. As you know, I’m extremely proud of the work the Monarch team does and firmly believe in the role financial advice plays in helping people secure their financial future. Which is why I felt it was important to outline just some of the ways we add value to our clients…

Like most couples, anniversaries are something we celebrate, usually with a glass (or two) of wine from one of our favourite vineyards.

But there’s another important anniversary that needs to ...

facebook-Linked_Image___ross-findon-303091-unsplashLast week I sat down with a couple to do a review of their insurances. It was a great meeting for a couple of reasons and I wanted to share the experience here…

I first started working with this couple a little over four years ago. Let’s call them Jack and Jill. Jack and Jill were newly married and wanted to get their life ...

Take control of your own destiny – don’t wait for the Government to tell you what’s best for you

Posted by:

facebook-Linked_Image___sydney-rae-408416-unsplashYou’ve probably heard that one of the changes announced in the Federal Budget was around insurance inside super. Almost all group superannuation accounts (that is, industry super funds and the superannuation products offered by the banks and other large financial institutions) come with an automatic level of life insurance and TPD cover. Some also provide some income protection insurance. The premiums for this ...

Why skipping your annual review could cost you big time

Annual Review 1The other day I met with a client for her annual review. Let’s call her Justine. Here is her story in a nutshell:

Ten years ago, Justine was newly divorced and raising two teenage boys. She had no assets to her name and knew she would need to go into serious debt to keep a roof over her boys’ heads.

Six years ago, ...
